James Dyer, D.D.S., M.S.
The Early Years
Ever since 5th grade, Dr. Jim Dyer knew that he wanted to be a dentist. During his teen years, when he had braces himself, he realized that he’d like to specialize in orthodontics. Fast forward to the present, and he is still confident that this was a great decision! He enjoys his daily life as an orthodontist and considers it rewarding to have helped create so many beautiful smiles down through the years. Even more, he knows it has been a privilege to enjoy generational family friendships during his orthodontic career.
Born and raised in the friendly west Texas town of Lamesa, Dr. Dyer’s family life was rich in church, school, and community activities. As a teen, he earned his Eagle Scout rank. After attending The University of Texas at Austin, where he enjoyed participation in The Longhorn Marching Band, he headed to The University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston where he earned his D.D.S. degree graduating in the top 10% of his class. From there it was directly on to the orthodontic post-doctoral program, completed in 1976.
Dr. Dyer and his wife, Shelli, thoroughly enjoyed the first years of their marriage in Wiesbaden, Germany. Here, he served as a U.S.A.F. Consultant in Orthodontics and she worked as a civil servant dental hygienist. In 1985, after practicing orthodontics for seven years in Victoria, Texas, they moved to the Grapevine/Southlake area with their three young children, Liana, David, and Grace. These were busy, good family years! Following the pleasure of 25 years of productive orthodontic practice in Grapevine, he established Argyle Orthodontics in 2000.
Argyle Orthodontics Today
Dr. Dyer is thankful for his Argyle practice, the patients and their families who trust in his care as an orthodontist, and for the compliments he and his employees receive on their very friendly and skilled office environment. He believes that his staff represents the benefits of professional teamwork at its finest! By combining personal attention to each patient and service with state-of-the-art technology and diagnostic advancements, Dr. Dyer and his team are able to offer the best orthodontic care available.
Whether it’s getting younger children started in the right orthodontic direction (the American Association of Orthodontics recommends screenings for children at age 7), working with teenagers as their smiles are continuing to develop, or orthodontically treating adults, Dr. Dyer is committed to his patients and their well-being. Also, many adults who have long-suffered with TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder; a dysfunctional condition of the jaw and bite which can cause significant overall discomfort) have found relief under his orthodontic care.
As empty nesters, Dr. Dyer and his wife still treasure family gatherings, quiet times at home together, traveling, college football, Ranger’s baseball, their community and church family, and especially now the blessings of each of their 7 grandchildren. Lately, Dr. Dyer has had a fun time learning to play the banjo! He is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, and he served for many years on the board of directors for the Southwest Society of Orthodontists.
